Following the death of her mother, Melor is forced to inherit the family khadam: a supernatural spirit servant who takes the form of an idealised version of Melor herself. At first, this sounds useful. But then it starts to take her place as a wife and mother. Melor must fight back before her life decides it no longer needs her.
