After his father's death, young Kikuo is taken in by a prestigious kabuki family in post-war Japan. Alongside the master's only son, Shunsuke, he devotes his life to the stage. Over the next five decades, their path towards becoming kokuho (national treasures of Japanese culture) is shaped by talent, lineage, brotherhood and rivalry.
