Discover ukiyo-e, the Japanese art of woodblock printing
From Edo Japan to Kota Kinabalu
Step into the world of ukiyo-e, the centuries-old Japanese tradition of hand-printing carved designs onto paper.
Ukiyo-e, often translated as "pictures of the floating world", flourished in Japan from the 17th to 19th centuries. These prints captured everyday life, landscapes, kabuki actors, and fleeting moments with bold lines and rich colors.
They were affordable and widely distributed to the public. Their influence reached far beyond Japan, inspiring Western artists like Van Gogh and Monet, two of the most famous European painters of the 19th century.
As part of her residency in Kota Kinabalu, artist Saki Kirizuki will guide two sessions where you can experience this process for yourself. From carving impressions to pressing them onto paper, you'll also share ideas and inspiration with the local community.
This is a rare chance to slow down, work with your hands, and learn directly from the artist. Places are limited to 15 participants per session.
