Bajau Laut, The Sea is Our Home
Sea, Memory, and Home
Bajau Laut: The Sea Is Our Home offers a quiet yet powerful portrait of life on the water in Semporna. Filmmaker Joo Peter follows the sea-dwelling Bajau Laut as they move, work, teach, and maintain what constitutes home when home is the sea. The film showcases the transmission of skills within families, including boat craft, navigation, and fishing knowledge, as well as the daily balancing act between freedom and fragility.
The 63-minute screening is followed by a conversation with the filmmaker about the social pressures facing the Bajau Laut today. Come ready to listen, ask questions, and think about what identity means when a community lives between tides, laws, and memory.
This is more than a film. It is an invitation to see, listen, and reflect.
Guest Speaker
