Sukatani Live at Toojou with Special Guests

Some nights, the city feels louder and sharper around the edges. This is one of those nights.

On 29 November 2025, Toojou in Bandaran Berjaya will host a special night with Sukatani, an apocalyptic post-punk duo from Purbalingga, Central Java, Indonesia. They will share the stage with Straw Lim and Syifasativa.

Coming from the grassroots of Purbalingga, Sukatani are active in social and environmental movements, and they carry that weight straight into their music. Their sound blends synths, post-punk and new wave, dark, danceable and political all at once. They are the kind of band that can light up a dance floor while making you think about the system you are dancing in.

This has not gone unnoticed. One of their protest songs calling out police corruption was pulled from digital platforms after pressure from the authorities. In response, messages of support and the hashtag #WeStandForSukatani have appeared across Indonesia's music scene, proof that people are paying attention to their message, not just their sound.

On this night in Kota Kinabalu, they are not alone. Local act Straw Lim will bring her own energy from the KK scene, and Syifasativa will add a Purbalingga folklore thread to the line-up. Three bands, one main stage and a crowd close enough to feel every kick drum and bass line.

The show starts at 8 pm and goes on until it burns itself out. Tickets cost RM50.

If you're into post-punk or socially conscious music, or if you just want to experience something authentic in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, then it's a good night to climb the stairs to Toojou and let the bands take over.

Sukatani

Where protest lyrics meet post punk beats

Coming from Purbalingga in Central Java, Indonesia, Sukatani are a synth punk and post punk duo that treat music as both a dance floor and a front line. Active in grassroots social and environmental movements, they write sharp, straightforward lyrics that transform anger at corruption and system failure into powerful music. Their sound blends dark goth atmospheres and new wave with bright, almost joyful synth pop, a mix that can feel heavy yet strangely uplifting within the same track.

Folk at the crossroads of art and earth

Alternative folk singer songwriter Straw Lim weaves multilingual stories about people, places and the world we all live in. After travelling to more than 50 countries and releasing her debut album Excursion in 2019, she found her way back to Kota Kinabalu, where her heart feels most at home. Her songs sit at the crossroads of art, humanity and the environment, blending soulful melodies with lyrics that encourage listeners to look a little closer and care a little more. Whether she is looping alone, playing in a small combo or with a full band, Straw brings a quiet depth and calm presence to the stage.

Syifasativa

Quiet folk carrying loud social truths

Syifasativa is a folk singer and activist from Purbalingga in Central Java who transforms sharp social critique into quiet, insistent songs. Across his four albums, including Aku Pusing (2020), Nikmati Sajalah (2021), Tanam Sawi di Bulan (2021) and Kelompok Tani Remaja (2022), he writes about what he sees around him: farmers defending their land, children walking away from controlling parents, street vendors being forced out by the pandemic and the police, and ordinary people trying to survive in a capitalist city where the rules keep tightening. His lyrics are poetic yet direct, addressing corruption, power, and the daily grind while still leaving room for small moments of hope.
