Urban Tamu, Old Soul, New Energy
For this edition of Urban Tamu, the organisers asked an AI to create an image of an old market in Sabah. The resulting image looks as though it could have been taken sixty years ago. It captures the essence of the past and the soul of the traditional market. The new energy comes from embracing that spirit and bringing it to The Walk at Riverson, along with music, food, and a selection of talented artisans.
Urban Tamu is a weekend market that makes you feel as if you are walking through a friendlier version of town. As you wander, you can stop at food and drink stalls to keep your energy levels up. There are also craft and handmade pieces for sale, and the vendors are happy to chat about their work. You show up for the relaxed atmosphere, stay for snacks and coffee, and somehow leave with small gifts you had not planned to buy, as well as a few new Instagram accounts to follow. You also walk away feeling a little more recharged for the week ahead.
On 29 and 30 November, from late morning to early evening, Urban Tamu will take over The Walk at Riverson. To align with Sabah Election Day, the market will be open for longer until 7pm so you can visit before or after voting. If you are not sure what to do after leaving the polling station, this is an easy option.
Part of the fun is simply being around people. There will be background music, places to sit and watch the world go by, and rows of stalls showcasing the character that small local businesses bring to the city.
Bring your friends, your tote bag and your smile. Come with an appetite and a little time to wander around. Although Urban Tamu is a modern market, the feeling at its core is still the same. You show up, support the makers from our city, and go home with more than you expected.
