Implementing Totally Protected Species Action Plans

The talk will be held in English.

The full title of the talk is "Implementing Totally Protected Species Action Plans: intelligence, enforcement and digital innovation".

From action plans to real protection on the ground

Are you concerned about the future of Sabah's wildlife and the increase in wildlife crime?
In this talk, Prof Benoît Goossens, Director of the Danau Girang Field Centre, will discuss what it means to provide comprehensive protection for endangered species.

On Wednesday, 10 December 2025, Prof. Goossens will explain how he and the Sabah Wildlife Department are improving intelligence gathering, enforcement and prosecution in order to combat wildlife crime. He will explain how specialist units such as the Intelligence Unit, the Forensic Unit and the Rapid Response Teams help to detect, investigate and respond more quickly to threats against wildlife.

You will also learn how digital tools, data and field knowledge can be combined to track illegal activities and build stronger cases in court. This talk offers an opportunity to gain insight into the ongoing efforts in Sabah and how we can all contribute to the long-term protection of these species.

Guest Speaker

Professor Benoît Goossens is the director of the Danau Girang Field Centre in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. He is also a professor at Cardiff University.
