The Last Tantagas: The Musical

The show will be performed in Dusun.

Guardians of Ritual and Memory

This musical, whose full title is The Last Tantagas: The Musical – Keepers of the Sacred Text, follows the final journey of four spiritual guardians of the Dusun Lotud people. The stage will also be filled by In Unity Chorale and the UMS Chamber Choir, led by Adsone Matthew.

The Dusun are one of Sabah's indigenous peoples and are made up of many communities. The Lotud are a Dusun community closely associated with the Tuaran area on Sabah's west coast.

In Lotud tradition, ritual knowledge is carried by specialists known as tantagas. These specialists are renowned for their ability to memorize and recite rinait, which are long ritual chants and prayers passed down through rigorous training.

These sacred chants carry prayers, stories, and ritual instructions that hold the community's spiritual knowledge together.

In the story, the four guardians have dedicated their lives to upholding centuries-old rituals and the sacred Rinait Monumbui. As they grow old and have no successors, they must face the painful truth that their lineage will end. The musical revisits the demanding path to becoming a Tantagas Wagu and the weight of a role that the modern world no longer understands or values.

With dignity, they choose a final farewell through a sacred buffalo sacrifice, releasing the spirits and closing the duties they have carried for a lifetime.

It is a moving tribute to identity, legacy, and a tradition's final breath.
