Two field guides to the wildlife of Borneo

The talk is held in English.

On Monday 26 January 2026, the Sabah Society is hosting an evening for fans of stories involving eight legs, cold blood and plenty of fieldwork. Two new books about Borneo's wildlife will be launched: one on spiders and one on reptiles. Both books are the result of years spent in the forest by authors who have paid close attention to the details that most of us overlook.

The first launch is for A Naturalist's Guide to the Spiders of Borneo by nature photographer Wong Tsu Shi. An avid observer of Borneo's spiders, insects and birds, Wong has devoted countless hours to documenting species that are often overlooked or misunderstood. His photographs have appeared in magazines and publications, and he is also the author of A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Borneo. In this new book, he brings the same careful eye and clear presentation to a group of animals that rarely gets its own spotlight.

The second launch is for A Field Guide to the Reptiles of Borneo by Professor Indraneil Das, a herpetologist from the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. With a long career dedicated to reptiles and amphibians and numerous books to his name, Professor Das has helped shape the study and understanding of Borneo's herpetofauna. This new field guide draws on his expertise to provide a practical reference for anyone spending time in the forest or by the rivers, or who simply wants to identify what they are looking at.

Throughout the evening, both authors will talk about their work and the process of turning years of observations into practical books. They will also discuss the continued importance of detailed guides in an age of instant information. There will be time for questions, conversation and, of course, signed copies.

If you are a hiker, birdwatcher, diver, photographer, student or simply someone who likes to know about animals, this is a gentle way to learn the names and stories behind the creatures you encounter.
