Across the Sulu Sea: A Journey Between Separated Twins
The talk is held in English.
Where Borders Divide and Histories Connect
Philip Golingai, a Sabah-born journalist, returns to the Sabah Society to give a talk exploring the ties between Sabah and Sulu. Despite being divided by borders, the two regions are closely linked through history, migration, politics, culture, and identity.
In his book, Across the Sulu Sea, Philip explores the lived realities of communities divided between Sabah and the southern Philippines. Blending reportage with personal narrative, he examines the porous borders that continue to influence the lives, memories and identities of people on both sides of the Sulu Sea.
This talk offers a thoughtful exploration of what it means to live in places that are officially divided yet closely connected by shared histories and everyday human relationships.
Guest Speaker
Philip Golingai is a Sabahan journalist and Associate Editor at The Star. His reporting often brings an East Malaysian perspective to national conversations, focusing on identity, politics, and life in Sabah.
