Strength that grows from women and nature

Coexistence pushes back against the idea that humans and nature live in separate worlds. Through rattan weaving, Ayue Juman treats nature as something we live with, not something to use up and throw away. She also places women at the centre of the story, not as a burden, but as a force that sustains life.

There is also something quietly historic here. This is the first time that Ruang Tamu Ekosistem has presented a solo exhibition by a woman artist. If you are interested in work that feels grounded, thoughtful, and deeply connected to community, this is worth a visit.

About the artist

Ayue Juman is a sculptor from Tambunan in Sabah who received formal training in sculpture at UiTM Sarawak and UiTM Shah Alam. Having grown up in a family of local craft makers, making things by hand is second nature to her. It is part of how she understands identity, place, and heritage.

Rattan is her main material, chosen for its flexibility and strength. Ayue uses it to create sculptural forms that are deeply rooted in local knowledge yet still speak a contemporary visual language. Her work has already appeared in group exhibitions, and pieces are held in local and international collections.

In her first solo exhibition, Coexistence, she reflects on a living ecology shaped by the connections between women, nature, and community. The exhibition invites visitors to slow down, look closely and sense the energy of the material.
