Metamorphosis

When work turns you into something else

Some stories are too strange to forget. This one starts with a man who wakes up and realises he is no longer quite human.

This December, Metamorphosis comes to Sabah as a professionally produced theater show at Synergy Dance Studio. There will be three chances to see the show live, with a cast of five performers. Adapted from Franz Kafka's classic story of the same name, the play follows Gregor, who one morning discovers that he has turned into a giant insect. At first, his family tries to cope. But slowly, fear, shame, and exhaustion set in, and Gregor becomes someone to hide rather than someone to love.

The production leans into the feeling of distance that many people experience but rarely acknowledge. It explores how work, responsibility, and social pressure can transform a person into a shell that merely answers messages, meets deadlines, and forgets how to rest. Metamorphosis asks a simple question that lands heavily: In the rush to be useful and successful, what happens to warmth, patience, and our ability to truly see each other?

The story is told on stage in multiple languages, including Mandarin, Hakka, English, and Malay. English subtitles allow you to follow every shift in tone. This is a rare opportunity to experience multilingual theater in Sabah, where performers use voice, body, and movement to convey the feeling of being pushed to the edge of one's own life.

If you enjoy theater, or are simply curious about this strange story, this is a good time to take a seat. Switch off your phone. Let the story unfold.

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) published The Metamorphosis in 1915. Its themes include loneliness, guilt, work, family obligations and the subtle violence of being reduced to your abilities. More than a century later, Kafka is widely regarded as one of the major writers of the twentieth century. This strange, unsettling story remains one of his most enduring works.
