Here's a quick durian guide for first-timers

Durian is often called the "king of fruits" in Southeast Asia. It's creamy, rich, and intense, and it has a smell that people either love or fear. If you're new to durian, start small and treat it like a tasting, not a challenge. If you came with your partner, kiss them before eating, not after. 😆

What to know before you buy

  • Ask to try a small portion first if tastings are available.
  • Look for flesh that is thick and custardy, not watery.
  • If you prefer milder flavors, choose lighter-colored flesh.
  • If you prefer stronger flavors, go for deeper yellow flesh.
  • Durian is usually sold by weight, so check the price before committing.

How to eat it without stress

  • Eat with your hands if you can. It's normal.
  • Bring wet wipes or rinse afterwards. The smell sticks.
  • Pack leftovers well. Many indoor places don't allow durian because of its aroma.

Fun Durian Facts

  • Some people say durian tastes like sweet custard. Others say it tastes like onions and cheese. It can be both, depending on the fruit.
  • The smell is so strong that many hotels and public transportation systems in the region ban it.
  • Durian trees can grow very tall, and the fruit can be heavy when ripe, so it's common to see safety nets in orchards during the season.
