Narrating Localities

Through printmaking, voices rise.

What happens when printmaking artists from across Asia gather in Sabah to raise a collective voice through art? Together, they create, exchange, and resist, placing their work at the heart of social struggles, political tensions, and collective memory.

Narrating Localities is a project that brings nineteen artists and collectives from different regions together in a spirit of cultural exchange and shared reflection. During their stay, the artists will participate in workshops, discussions, and field visits led by the Sabah-based collective Pangrok Sulap. These experiences will deepen their understanding and broaden their perspectives.

The exhibition at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lies at the core of this initiative. It showcases works that confront urgent global issues. Some question mass tourism. Others call for gender equity. Several address colonialism, displacement, and injustice. Some pieces are deeply personal, while others are clearly political. But all share one conviction: art can challenge power, open dialogue, and build bridges across cultures.

Together, these works invite us to see, reflect, and take a stand.
